About Joseph Fabish

Authority on Incan and Andean Textile Weaving

Recognized for his expertise in areas such as Incan textile traditions and contemporary Peruvian weaving, in 2002 Joseph Fabish lectured on "The Origin and Evolution of Design in Huamachuco Blankets" at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Institute of Andean Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Mr. Fabish also gave talks on Huamachuco Textiles before the nonprofit Textile Museum Associates of Southern California in 2004 and 2007. He compiled much of his scholarship from over the decades on the site www.peruvianblankets.com. Visitors to the site are able to access publications such as “A Tale of Survival: Textiles of the Huamachuco” and “The Royal Inca Weavers from Huamachuco.”

Joseph Fabish also presented a narrative of how Incan textile traditions were able to miraculously survive in the Huamachuco area of northern Peru, with motifs, patterns, hues, and designs handed down by families through the generations. He put together a visual gallery of unique, hand-spun, dyed, and woven textiles representative of the Huamachuco region and other nearby surrounding areas.

Joseph Fabish earned his BS in geology at California State University, Los Angeles, graduating in 1986.

Joseph Fabish also co-authored the recently published book "Andamarcan Textiles: An Elite Inca Weaving Tradition from Peru Found on the Ancient Lands of the Haciendas Sinsicapa (San Ignacio) and Tulpo" which is a culmination of decades of his research retracing the unique weaving history and traditions of Huamachucan textiles and containing over 900 images.
